INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE (IFU)

Spring Action Scissors & Needle Holders

Intended Use

Spring action scissors are designed for suture cutting and precise cutting of soft tissues. Instruments such as Castroviejo scissors fall within this category. Due to their razor-sharp cutting edges, repeated autoclave cycles may gradually dull the blades.

Castroviejo needle holders are used to hold sutures during delicate suturing procedures. These instruments are precision-engineered and may be sensitive to repeated autoclave exposure, which can reduce the effectiveness of the spring mechanism over time. This applies to both spring action scissors and needle holders.

Cleaning Instructions

  1. Immediately after use, rinse instruments under warm running water to remove blood and debris.

  2. Clean thoroughly using a neutral pH enzymatic detergent.

  3. Use an ultrasonic cleaner when available for optimal results.

  4. Rinse with distilled or deionized water.

  5. Dry completely using a lint-free cloth or medical-grade air.

Sterilization Instructions

Preferred Method: Chemical Sterilization

Chemical sterilization is recommended to help extend the lifespan of these delicate spring action instruments.

Alternative Method: Steam Sterilization / Autoclave

  • Temperature: 121°C / 250°F

  • Cycle Time: Gravity Cycle: 30 minutes at 121°C

  • Dry Time: Minimum 20–30 minutes

Important

  • Do not use 134°C / 273°F autoclave settings, as higher temperatures may significantly reduce the lifespan of the spring mechanism.

  • Never use dry heat sterilization for these instruments.

Important Handling Notes

  • Always sterilize instruments with the working tips in the open position.

  • Place instruments in a sterilization pouch or cassette.

  • Do not overload sterilization trays.

  • Avoid placing these instruments under heavy instruments or cassettes, as this may cause bending, misalignment, or damage to the spring mechanism.

Maintenance & Care

  • Ensure instruments are fully dry before storage.

  • Inspect regularly for signs of damage, wear, or misalignment.

Warnings & Precautions

  • Do not use bleach, chlorine-based, or highly alkaline cleaners.

  • Do not use dry heat sterilization methods.

  • Do not leave instruments closed during sterilization.

  • Improper cleaning or sterilization may lead to corrosion, reduced performance, or loss of spring action.

Storage

Store in a clean, dry environment. Protect from moisture and avoid direct contact with other instruments to prevent damage.
